Illustrated with black and white photographs taking mainly behind Soviet lines during the occupation of the country and as Schuyler Jones describes it "adding up to an album of despair through which there are occasional glimpses of the undaunted spirit of the people of Afghanistan." Ed Grazda (1947- ) is a well published American photo-journalist who has made many visits to Afghanistan and the North-West Frontier of Pakistan and wrote a subsequent book about Afghanistan between 1992 and 2000.
