Night Letters Inside Wartime Afghanistan

1992 pages 155 pages dust wrapper in hardback Orion publishers. Account of travels into Afghanistan under Soviet Occupation. The author travel to Jegdelek from which Soviet troops were ejected by the Mujahedin after a day of occupation. “Jegdelek was proud of its history of resistance and rebellion. Back in the winter of 1842(sic), during the first Anglo Afghan War, the local tribesmen trapped an entire British Army in the gorges to the north and annihilated it. Only one man, a Doctor Brydon, survived to tell the tale... You could still find bits of bone and bullets, and uniforms inscribed VR Victoria Regina on the steep slopes below the town."
