Sikorski Radek

Dust of the Saints

UK First Edition 1989 with dust wrapper in very good condition 274 pages
Herat is famous as Afghanistan's home of Sufism. Abdullah Ansari Afghanistan's famous Sufi is buried here amongst others. Many of these monuments received damage during the Soviet occupation and the author sets out to find out about what happened to the large medieval food cauldron in the jamiyeh Mosque, the Minarets of the Mussalla of Herat and the Sufi Shrines.
Sikorski provides interesting insights into the Herat uprising of 1979:
"An old woman , a Turkoman survivor from the Bolshevik assault on Bokhara in 1920, was going round the villages talking to other women and young brides. She told the women what a massacre the assault on Bokhara had been and showed them the scar on her breast made by a Russian sword. She told them that when Bokhara was taken all the women were raped and that, if they did not make their men fight the communists, they would be dishonoured too. After this, it was no use trying to reason with the men ( to delay the uprising in Herat to a pre-planned date). The women taunted them and their blood boiled. The local leaders in Herat decided to rise up ... forty-one days before the appointed date".
